5 Reasons to Try Yoga

I use to think that Yoga was just stretching with a bit of meditation... until I actually tried it. Oh how wrong I was! I attended my first Yoga class 5 years ago in Sheffield. It was an advanced Ashtanga class and I was definitely out of my depth. I sweated my way through it and my muscles did that uncontrollable quivery thing (embarrassing). It increased my heart rate, my breathing rate, and worked my muscles as well as stretching them- I was pleasantly surprised and most definitely impressed. Prior to this I had no idea that Yoga could provide such a great full body work out. 5 years on and I now do yoga regularly as part of my fitness routine.

5 reasons why you should try yoga...

Increase Your Flexibility. Stretching and flexibility are parts of fitness that are often neglected. Regular Yoga can improve flexibility; good flexibility helps joints move more freely which is important in preventing injury.

Stress Buster. I would most definitely say that yoga calms and clears my mind. I start the weekend off with an hour of Yoga. My yoga teacher begins the session with a thought for the day, followed by 5 minutes of mindful meditation. Each class is ended with relaxation. It helps put the stress of the week behind me.

Strengthen Your Body. Many of the poses and sequences in yoga involve supporting your own body weight. It's a great way to strengthen and tone your body in a natural way. Strengthening exercises should form part of your 150 minutes of exercise during the week according to the physical activity guidelines for adults.

Yoga Makes You More Aware. During a yoga class you learn to control your breath, also known as pranayama. The breath is seen as the bridge between the mind and body. Yoga requires mastery and focus. It has helped me gain better self awareness. Self awareness is a key component in emotional intelligence which can aid personal growth and success.
